Claude Cowork is Anthropic's tool for handing Claude multi-step work on your own files. You choose the files and tools it can use. It runs in the Claude Desktop app on macOS and Windows and is built for non-coding work such as research, reports and document creation (claude.com, datacamp.com).

What is Claude Cowork?

Claude Cowork is the part of Claude where you hand over real work and let it run. Anthropic's product page describes it as the place to hand Claude real work, with desktop, web and mobile access.

Every conversation starts as a chat, and when a task needs it, Claude uses Cowork's capabilities, with permission to read, edit and create files you choose. Cowork is built for non-coding knowledge work such as research, analysis and document creation, and it uses the same agentic approach as Claude Code.

Cowork works in the folders you allow, so the task can run on your actual documents. Our guide to Claude AI for Small Business: A Practical Guide for Aruba explains the basics in more detail. Claude can take on a report due at noon and keep going even after you have closed your laptop (claude.com).

Its agentic capabilities, including longer-running work and the use of connectors and tools, are becoming part of how Claude operates in general. For a business owner, the practical question is which tasks you can hand over (venturebeat.com).

How do you use Claude Cowork on a folder?

Point Cowork at a folder, describe the result you need and let it work. Users can point Cowork at a messy folder, for example to sort a cluttered downloads folder or pull expense data from a pile of receipt screenshots. Cowork can organise files into folders, rename files based on their content, delete duplicates, convert between formats and generate reports from data.

A simple way to start is to give one clear instruction at a time:

  1. Choose one folder that only holds files you are happy for Claude to read and change.
  2. Check the plan Claude proposes before you approve it.
  3. Review the result, then ask for the next change.

By default, Claude asks for permission before taking an action, so you can review each step. You can configure it to keep working and interrupt you only when closer review is needed.

For a first task, keep the default. Clear instructions matter here: a vague request produces a vague result, so be specific about the folder, the output and the format you need.

How much does Claude Cowork cost?

For a small team, checking which paid plan fits is the first step before you plan any work.

Anthropic lists its prices excluding applicable tax and says prices and plans are subject to change at its discretion. Because the price can change, check the current pricing page before you decide.

The bigger practical question is usage. Cowork consumes limits faster than standard chat, so heavy users may need to upgrade to a higher tier.

Track how often you use it for a week before choosing a plan.

A sensible approach is to start on the lowest paid plan, run one or two real tasks, and see whether the limits get in your way. Upgrade only when you hit them on work you do every week.

Is Claude Cowork available on Windows?

Anthropic made Cowork generally available on every paid plan, running on macOS and Windows through the Claude Desktop app.

Anthropic's product page describes Cowork as running on desktop, with web and mobile access. If you work on a Windows PC, install the Claude Desktop app and use Cowork from there. Web and mobile access are rolling out in beta.

Choose the folders you want Claude to work in, describe the result, and review each step it proposes before you approve it. Keep sensitive folders out of scope until you are comfortable with how it behaves.

How does Claude Cowork differ from Claude chat?

A standard Claude chat has no filesystem access and can only view uploaded files, with a limit of about 30MB each. Cowork works inside the folders and tools you allow, so it can read, edit and create real files.

Cowork consumes limits faster than chat, so heavy users may need to upgrade. For a business owner, the difference comes down to whether the task needs your own files or only a question answered.

What can small businesses use Claude Cowork for?

Anthropic's customers use Cowork for tasks such as pulling scattered updates into a single report, building onboarding checklists and reconciling spreadsheets (finance.yahoo.com).

See also our guide to Claude AI for Small Business: A Practical Guide for Aruba for more ideas on where to begin.

Scheduling is where the time savings add up. Anthropic says you can schedule a report once and receive it daily, weekly or monthly, with Claude pulling the numbers and comparing them to the period before.

Anthropic's product page also gives example uses for marketing, such as gathering weekly reviews on a schedule, and for sales, such as researching an account before the first call. A hospitality team could use the same approach to collect weekly guest feedback into one summary, while a financial services team could prepare a recurring reconciliation.

Anthropic also lists a finance workflow plugin covering journal entries, reconciliation, financial statements and variance analysis. Connectors matter too. Anthropic's official Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Drive connectors have reached general availability, giving Cowork direct read access and draft-only writes for Gmail.

Laurens Ras notes that people hear "less grunt work" when the pitch is aimed at staff, while owners hear "more output, more efficiency, more money". Frame your first project around the result your team needs, so both groups see the benefit.

Is Claude Cowork safe to use for business?

Cowork carries real security risks, and you need to manage them before you give it access to anything important. The main one is prompt injection.

A prompt injection attack occurs when malicious instructions are embedded in external content that Claude reads as part of a legitimate task. Web content is a primary route for this, which is why Anthropic advises giving Claude internet access only to sites you trust (support.claude.com).

PromptArmor's research states that Claude Cowork is vulnerable to file exfiltration attacks via indirect prompt injection, because of known but unresolved isolation flaws in Claude's code execution environment. In the exploit it demonstrated, no point in the process required human approval (promptarmor.com).

Laurens Ras says AI makes mistakes and that people should put time in to understand it. Treat Cowork as a capable assistant that still needs supervision.

Anthropic's own guidance gives a practical checklist. Avoid connecting Cowork to sensitive documents, limit its Chrome extension to trusted sites and monitor for suspicious actions that may indicate prompt injection (cuinfosecurity.com).

Keep sensitive client files out of the folders you point it at, and limit browsing on a work machine to sites you trust. These steps make a successful attack harder to carry out.

What happens to your data when you use Claude Cowork?

Local session transcripts from Cowork are kept for six years by default. Cloud sessions run through Cowork in the cloud have no default retention period. Claude always asks before permanently deleting files, in any mode (platform.claude.com).

These are the platform's default settings, and a legal or privacy assessment is a separate task for your own adviser. For any obligations that apply to your business in the United States, check with your own adviser.

When you review your settings, decide who in your team may use Cowork and which folders it can reach. Keep client files that carry personal information out of its scope until you know how long the transcripts are kept and who can see them. Writing this down in a short internal rule is quick, and it means your team agrees on the same boundaries before anyone starts a task.

How should a small business start with Claude Cowork?

Laurens Ras describes a client who wanted one agent to take over the whole operation. When he explained that the work would take time, the client expected results in about two months. His own view is that one big agent is more prone to mistakes, so each small automation should solve one specific problem.

Map the steps first, then automate the one piece that causes the most trouble. Simple and robust beats complex and clever. In some situations an agent is the wrong tool, and a simpler solution works better.

The reason is reliability.

Several small, well-specified tasks are easier to check, easier to repair and easier to hand to someone else. Start with one folder, one recurring report or one checklist, run it for a few weeks, and only then add the next task.

If your team has no technical background, a structured course helps. The Tribute runs a Getting started with AI workshop for teams who want to understand what AI is, how to use it properly and where it fits in their daily work. No technical background is needed.

Frequently asked questions

Is it co-work or cowork?

The product name is written as one word, Claude Cowork, and that is how Anthropic presents it. Write it as one word in your own documents so your team uses the same spelling when they search for it. Using one spelling everywhere also keeps your internal guides easy to find.

Will Claude Cowork be renamed?

Anthropic says the Cowork name will eventually disappear, although users may continue seeing it during the transition. Its agentic capabilities are becoming part of how Claude operates generally, so the features you learn now carry over even if the label changes.

Do I need a paid Claude plan to use Cowork?

Cowork is available on every paid Claude plan. Check Anthropic's pricing page for current plans, because prices exclude applicable tax and can change at Anthropic's discretion. Start on the lowest paid plan and upgrade only if the usage limits get in your way.

Can Claude Cowork read my email?

Yes, through a connector. Anthropic's official Gmail connector has reached general availability and gives Cowork direct read access to Gmail, with draft-only writes.

Anthropic advises limiting what Cowork can reach and watching for suspicious actions that may indicate prompt injection. Connect only the accounts your team needs for the task at hand.

Does Claude Cowork work on a phone?

Cowork runs in the Claude Desktop app on macOS and Windows, with web and mobile access rolling out in beta.

For a small business, that means folder-based work is best done on a computer. Use the phone for quick questions and check progress on the desktop app when a task needs your files.
